Does anyone know if Success Pond road is open now? We need to get out there to start patrolling soon, and open up Speck Pond.

The gate on the Berlin end was unlocked this past week. I dont know the condition of the road, but did read in the local paper that the camp owners on Success Pond, were having issues with Dillon logging. Dillon had the road closed to all traffic including ATV's previously. The camp owners have a right of way but are having a difficult time using it.

Open road

The Success road is indeed open, but a bit washboardy. We have been up there doing AT Boundary maintenance since Labor day. We are currently working between Carlo Col and Gentian Pond, and using Success Trail for packing in our supplies and equipment. We sure would welcome volunteers to help us a bit since I for example am an unpaid volunteer working for the ATC. We expect to be working for September and October on that project. We work Tuesday through Saturday. If you would like to join us for a bit, just listen for the sound of a clearing saw off the trail 500 feet or so and come join us. No special skills required, just clothes for bushwhacking and gloves for tossing cut brush off the boundary into the woods. We may even let you paint blazes. A clearing saw is just a weed whacker on steroids, and sounds like one.

Any idea if they are logging the area this winter?

From the looks of the Berlin end of the road, logging is in progress--deep muddy ruts frozen solid in today's single-digit temperatures. With a few major exceptions, driving to the Success Pond Road trailheads is always more challenging than hiking the Mahoosucs. Strange to see the Berlin millyard so empty and quiet although the nearby smaller Gorham mill was chugging away.

Goose Eye via Success Pond Road 1/6/08

I am leading a Goose Eye hike on Sunday Jan 8, but only if we can get in via Success Pond Road. Otherwise we will hike something else.

Interested to hear if Mohamed hiked this peak this weekend.

Thanks and Congratulations!

Thanks for the info; it sounds as if they are logging in there this winter, so if we can time it right, we should be able to get to the Goose Eye TH.

Good work in bagging the peak. The stream crossings may be even dicier this coming weekend with the forecast high temps on Sat and Sun.
