I don't have the 64s, I have it's predecessor, the 62s. Hopefully the user interface is similar enough that the following will be of use to you...
I don't believe so.
I don't think so. When you have this screen displayed, hitting the "up" or "right" arrow on the rocker will cause the screen to become brighter, hitting the "down" or "left" arrows causes the screen to become dimmer. If you have the map displayed, and the screen goes dark, you can hit any of the rocker buttons, and the screen (which should be displaying the map) will "wake up", and since it is on the map page, the map will be displayed.
When the map is being displayed, hit the "Menu" button, then select "Orientation", then select "North Up".
I think that what you are experiencing is that you have track logging turned on, and the track log is being displayed. There are a number of things you can do.
1) If you don't want track logging turned on, from the main screen, select "Setup", then select "Tracks", then select "Track Log", then select "Do not record". This will stop the GPS from recording further tracks. But 1) that doesn't do anything about the track(s) that have already been recorded. and 2) Logging the track is one of the useful things you are using the GPS for.
2) You could delete the track log, either by connecting it to your computer and deleting the track using Basecamp, or to do it from the GPS itself, from the main screen, select "Track Manager", and then select the track you want to delete, then select "Delete". If you haven't explicitly renamed the track, it will be the "Current" track, in which case, instead of "Delete", you will want to select "Clear current track".
3) If it isn't the current track, one of the selections in addition to "Delete" will say "Show On Map". If you highlight this option and hit enter, it will toggle to "Hide on Map", and that track will no longer display on the map.
Hope this was helpful, if any of it doesn't apply to 64 series GPSs, perhaps someone who actually owns a 64 series GPS will chime in.

1. Can the GPS operate with dead batteries if it is attached by the USB cord to my laptop? I'm guessing no, but I want to make sure.
I don't believe so.
2. When the GPS is on, and I click the power button once, I get a screen with the time, date, backlight, battery, and GPS indicators. I think I have figured out how to make the backlight set to 0, but is there a way to disable this screen so it doesn't show up and instead when I click the power button I am taken directly to the map?

3. Is there a way to make it so that North (or magnetic north) always appears at the top of the display screen? (other than just orienting myself to facing north like I would do when navigating with a map and a compass?)
When the map is being displayed, hit the "Menu" button, then select "Orientation", then select "North Up".
4. It seems that I must have something turned on unintentionally, because my map on the screen has a blue line that denotes the trails I traveled yesterday. What have I done? How do I turn that bit off?
