eyes ?

I was just thinking of some of the readings down there in general not just the Cherry-Garrard ...Emperor Penguin egg gathering
Shackleton did quite the heavy duty mnt traverse thrown into the mix down there as well.

For other temps that body parts freeze...It always seems to me that the eyes would be so vulnerable to freezing, but I can't think of anyone ever stating that this happens to us or even to other species.
Anyone know more about that or why it doesn't happen ?

Because it HURTS when the eyes get cold, so you'll do something about it.

Because they have a layer of water over them, and this helps.

Because they're in the head, where there is a lot of blood flow.

FWIW, I've had my eyes freeze shut a number of times., but this is a bit different. When blinking, some moisture (from breathing) hits the eyelashes and freezes the top ones to the bottom. Similar to a crocodile having strong muscles to close their mouth, but not open it, we (or at least I) have very weak muscles for opening our eyes.

Frozen Alive

In this issue, March 2006 of Explore, (Canada)
There is a story (page41) of a young girl who is in the Guinness Book of Records... for surviving the lowest body temperature ever recorded.

Up in Saskatchewan, back in 1994, she was only two years old when she got stranded outside for 6 hrs at -22 degrees C.
She was discovered dead and her legs were frozen solid.
Her core temp registered 14 C..normal is 37.5.

After warming her (and her blood) and other special procedures for 5 hrs... her heart started beating again.
Now these years later she did lose one leg but other than that she pulled through ok.

Pretty remarkable !
