So things are progressing VERY early this year. I was driving a dirt road in Nottingham this evening and had to slam on my brakes a couple times...Marsh marigolds...not that early, in full bloom...but the suprise...purple trillium...many in full bloom. A day near 90'll do that I guess.

Kevin and I just trekked around Pawtuckaway and the Lamprey River Watershed in the rain.

We found some arbutus, and a nice patch of bloodroot in bloom! I also saw spring beauty on the banks of the Lamprey yesterday.

Nice shots so far this year. Things have been VERY early. For example...I stopped by Adams Point on Saturday, and found the Hepatica there in full bloom. The shot that I have of it was taken there on May 5th in 2006. That's a huge swing.

Grouseking...I believe you have some sort of Phlox.
Rick...the 'grass' is a sedge, can't tell what kind from here, but definately a sedge.

I met up with a few folks in Pawtuckaway today, and shot the bloodroot. Also some marsh violets and honeysuckle in bloom.

Love these hepatica shots everyone is getting.

The purple trillium are in full bloom down here in SONH, and I have to return to this streambank tomorrow when I have more time and better light!!!

On the otherhand...I really like this macro shot!

DSettahr: that first one is a violet. There are a few different species of yellow ones, but I think you've got Viola Rotundifolia, the Round-Leaved Yellow Violet.

Trout lily aka Dogtooth Violet. Genus is Erythronium. Species is probably americanum. Growing in southern Maine and just coming into bloom.

I went back with Kevin to the trillium spot I found yesterday...I've never seen so many trillium in such a photogenic spot!

More of the usual suspects in the Ossipees today, 4-15. Shared hike with black flies, now biting, and one tick.

Hepatica mostly gone by but a couple of "gardens" left.

More Round-Leaved Yellow Violet, getting tired

The same "hepatica gardens" from your picture on April 15 are still going strong as of yesterday, April 20. Conditions were too windy, though, for decent close-up/macro shots.

Also, the black flies were simply horrible -- moderately aggressive while moving on the trail but when stopped to actually set up for photography...

...relentless. I donated some blood yesterday, for certain.
