UNH Trail Washout
Project Description: This loop ascends Mt Hedgehog and provides a nice day hike that is just under 5 miles. A washout was developing on the eastern portion of this loop prior to the tropical storm. The storm intensified the damage, creating a 600 foot long, 3 foot deep trench in the trail. This project will mitigate resource damage and encourage the water to take its natural course by installing drainages and check dams to direct and slow the flow of the water, eventually filling in the washout.
Trail Location: The UNH trail is located off the Kacamagus Highway - NH 112, .
When: Saturday, June 9, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Who: The first 8 people to sign up; we need a minimum of 4.
Where: Meet at the Saco Ranger Station at 9 a.m.and travel as a group to the UNH Trailhead for the day. Personal vehicle required.

Wild River Wilderness Tentsites - multiple projects
Project Description: In 2011, tent sites were constructed at the former site of the historic Perkins Notch shelter. These tent pads are in a place that provides for a better camping experience and will help to minimize any potential damage to nearby No Ketchum Pond. Hardening of this site using native soil must be done to finish final construction and allow for a better camping experience in the area.
Trail Location:
When: TBD, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Who: 4 individuals
Where:
Skills Required: Ability to hike in moderate terrain with 35 - 40 lbs packboard.

Project Description: The Perkins Notch Shelter is located within the Wild River Wilderness, in close proximity to the shoreline of No Ketchum Pond. Although it is known as the Perkins Notch Shelter it is actually a half mile away from the Notch proper. In order to manage the use and impacts in a way more consistent with wilderness values, a decision was made to remove the Perkins Notch Shelter. The shelter was demolished in the summer season of 2011. Materials related to the shelter must be carried out to preserve the character of the area.
