They show how lithium and NiMH cells outperform alkaline cells at higher current drains. (Digital cameras tend to draw high currents for short periods of time. The poorer performace of alkaline cells at high currents is why they aren't a good choice.)
1V per cell is often used as the practical end-of-life of the cell. (The .1V/cell cutoff used in these charts and tables extracts very little additional energy.) FWIW, all my GPSes shut down at 1V/cell.
