I'm looking for some decent winter hiking boots for my son. (size 3) Anyone out there hear of good boots but that won't break the bank?

I got these for my 2 boys (6 + 8) earlier this fall. They have used them for 2 hikes in Catskills' (Panther & Balsam Lake). No break-in issues to worry about and the boot seems to be solid.

Was there snow? Were they warm enough. I worry about hiking in winter with feet getting cold.

My kid always hiked in Sorels when he was that size. He did a lot of winter hiking and snowshoeing in them. You can throw a pair of spikes on them for better traction. And you can still use the boots for shoveling the driveway or to go sledding.

I have found the kids to be pretty resilient when it comes to footwear choices while hiking. Although we do not go out on difficult weather days, we have done some fairly long days with what most of us would consider as "less than ideal" footwear.

Light snow, freezing rain but temps were upper 20's so nothing real cold. Haven't had them out in those really cold temps yet.
