I have done this trip maybe 8 times in snow and think I wore crampons twice & snowshoes twice (one trip was both). Therefore the odds are good that you will need neither one.

However if you are driving 5.5 hours you will probably want to carry both so as not to miss out.

And yes, some people who missed the trail going down spent a night out because off-trail it was too deep without snowshoes, and the next day Fish&Game dropped them snowshoes from a helicopter along with a bill because it was reckless to hike without them.
 
There is a zone of the Greenleaf Tr a bit below Lafayette Summit that can form an icy slab with a long runout. A hiker took a fall here, blew his arrest, and broke both ankles self-arresting with his crampons.

I'd take both my crampons and ice axe. I'm likely to take my snowshoes too.
