I didn''t think i would get this much interest - but please don't PM me about this trip b/c my plan is to finalize this at CMR with the larger group that friday eve and very subject to change up till the last minute -

I have recieved a few PM's about keeping folks "in the loop" - my advice would be to go to CMR friday night and get the final word. I want to hike with people are doing this for jayh's cause and not just people who want to bag a traverse, not sosicalize with the group before and after, etc.. this may sound harsh - but its more about the fun and fundraiser than the traverse. I am just tossing fun ideas out there to get people thinking.

sorry but you will have to keep yourselves in the loop by stopping by CMR friday. :D :D :)

How about we laminate some Sherpa K pictures

Someone should make sure to have the McRat SherpaK towel on the trip, too. And not use it for wiping sweat!!!
:)

Donations..

Well as far as the towel goes, all my hiking friends (biking friends included) say I don't sweat!

Anyway, as a reminder and since we now have a large thread, to refresh people's memory links to the online donation:

http://www.firstgiving.com/poundthepresis

And also to a hard copy of the pledge form which you can use for yourself and for those that don't like to donate online:

Pledge form (PDF format, save to harddrive and print).

Checks should be written out to "The Brain Tumor Society" and cash and checks will be collected at the event AND I'll also provide you all with an address to send them to TBTS directly for those that need to collect after the event. Usually there are. Cash and checks that do get sent to TBTS should be somewhat labelled that it is for the TBTS Pound the Presis hike so they can tabulate it up for me.

I'm in occasional contact with the fine folks there. They told me because of the date of the hike, it might not make the summer issue of "heads up" which is their little trade magazine they publish but they're still interested in a picture or two so take a lot of pictures and we can send them a few of the best ones. They mentioned that their fall issue is typically full of research papers and stuff so they might not have room for a short article like they did for my Devil's path and the Escarpment trail.

I believe the Devil's Path picture they used was from Dibble's Quarry and Pecoy Notch with Warren there and a group shot from the finish at the Escarpment trail.

Last minute

Uhhhhh...hey JayH!
I'm planning to fly up from Bmore to join this monumental trek!
Barring any unforseen dog boarding issues -- count me in!

(Because when I hike in NH, I hike it BIG!)

Then we will finally meet the biggest "venter" in person!

I've been doing some reading to research just what a Presi Traverse is or could be, and trying to familiarize myself with the terrain and surrounding (my desktop background is now a view of the Presidential Range from Jackson (thank you, Arm).

I'm also tight on time (and too lazy to review this entire thread), but I'm interested in what plans are for a semi-conservative Presi Traverse. There are so many ways up to Madison!! I did read Jay's initial post and see that Valley View is the proposed route in/up and once up to Madison the route is fiarly straight forward going on.

Here's what I'm interested in getting a handle on:
a. Where would be be staying on Friday night?
b. What peaks are in the plan? (I know there are options here...)
c. I read about bail-out routes -- not sure how that works. You bail.... then what?
d. Where do we come out -- and the plan from there... I know there are plans for car spoting the night before.
e. Where are we on Saturday night? Who's feeding us, rubbing our feet and giving body massages?

What else am I missing? I guess I'm trying to get my arms around the route and the logistics.

Work could get in the way, but I'm playing that card way out, so I'm 98% there and looking forward to hiking with a bunch I've not been with before. I'm about to create a fundraising email to send out complete with photos and links, so I want to have as much info and background in place as possible. If you have anything that would add to the email, please let me know.

Pine Link or Valley Way are the two easiest ways up to Madison! Higher start on Pine Link! From there on, pick your peaks! Some, like Clay, are very minor. After a long day, Eisenhower might be one to avoid! May the rain gods be on vacation that weekend!

Hi Double Bow, I plan to start at around 5 AM, but I most likely will take Valley Way to Watson Path to Mt Madison.

Hey Bubba.

As far as lodging, the main group and main access for info will be at cherry mountain road, which is north of Crawford Notch. I know Giggy knows this place better than I if you want say landmarks to look for. I've only been there once (last year).

As far as route planning. Again, I'm not that familiar with the whites as most of you. I do know that we took Valley Way directly to Madison hut, and not the Watson path, although supposedly shorter, was told it really isn't any faster cause it's less of a road and more rocky. Plus, if you want, you could drop pack at Madison hut and go tag Madison since you kind of have to go back the same way to head towards Adams.

Saturday night dinner, good question. I don't know what is out there, when we did our traverse last year, we had Shizzmac making burgers so we had a BBQ.

Anybody know a place near Crawford Notch that can handle a good 20-30 hungry hikers?

On friday night, we'll do some gungho planning about car spots for the bailout points. It was agreed to last year when we did it to use the Ammo Ravine trail down as the bailout point and we only had that. Cause I gather once you pass Monroe, you might as well continue down to Crawford Notch. (correct me if I'm wrong!).

My spreadsheet will be updated on Friday night and this will be the source of trying to organize who is where and what is going on. When a hiker returns to CMR (it would be nice even if you're not staying there to check in to know that you are out. Plus, we'll be trying for dinner somewhere anyway), he/she would simply find the spreadsheet and mark you out as returned. If you know you're not doing the whole thing, we can work on shuttling your car to the finish point on friday night and you can help in shuttling folks from there.

As far as parking goes, I know CMR isn't the best in terms of parking and the rangers seem to be strict on this matter. We could propose to meet at the Highland Center in Crawford Notch to stash cars for those staying at CMR. I might have access to a van, (I'll have to ask the person again offline if this is the case).

I wont bother to discuss what a true presi traverse is, when I did it, I did Madison to Pierce(Clinton) (which is an out and back from the crawford path). SwampYankee did Jackson and Webster even though they are not presidents. You are, of course, welcome to do that if you wish.

My other question (besides a good dinner spot for saturday night) is:

Is there cell reception at the Highland Center or the Cog Railway base or any of the a bail out spots? or Cherry Mountain Road (woodsy!). This would make coordinating easier as we'd be at least be in contact if someone happens to need a ride..

Due to some business issues I won’t be staying at CMR Friday night but just showing up at the Appalachia trailhead to start in the middle of the night sometime (hopefully with a fellow VFTT’er to be named later). I am sure that at my speed I will run into most of you throughout the day as you pass me.

I’ll try and join for dinner Saturday- but I need to get home that night as well.

Recent hikes have made me realize what hiking does to my body the day after- especially my back and knees. Therefore, my goal for the hike is 1) to collect as much in donations as possible and 2) get from Appalachia to Crawford Notch and be able to walk in the morning. As such we’ll definitively be hitting a couple of peaks (Jefferson and Pierce) and then the others will be on a as we go decision.

I think there is cell reception at the COG Base Station - but I have seen it hit or miss depending upon service used.

Is there anyone else doing this who's going to be getting up there in the evening (ie has to work on Friday)? If so, what's your plan? I don't want to be the only one NOT starting at before 5am!

I'll be flying in from Baltimore friday night and getting up there pretty late, not sure what time we are starting -- I'm hiking this together with MichaelJ.

What time were you thinking of starting??

a) most are staying at Cherry Mt road I think.
b) The entire pressie range - not going to list the main ones - but some toss in jackson/webster as well
c) common bail out routes are cog (bail down jewell trail or ammo trail), - some toss a car at ike (edmunds trail head)
d) come out on 302 near the highland center.
e) sat night is whatever you want to do - my plan is back at CMR, I would think people will just fend for themselves, etc.. I know shizzmac plans on hiking this year (he didn't last year whch is why he was able to set up grill, etc..) so not sure whats up with grills this year. so not sure anyone is feeding you!!!

I think there are enough options that you can as much or little as you want. Its really going t depend on weather. if its nice, many will do the entire thing, if its not - maybe nobody does it - have to wait and see.. June is still a quirky enough month that it can be nice or cold rain.

CMR is off 302 before tbase road, bretton woods, etc.

most people go up valley way to mad hut.

Una_dogger and I probably won't be in the area until pretty late Friday night since I'll be picking her up from the airport on the way north, so we are likely to just crash somewhere on the way rather than try to get to CMR and just meet folks in the morning when/wherever. Hopefully not too early, I don't know if I can do the whole traverse on 4 hours sleep!

Since that precludes including my car in a spot the night before, will we be able to get a ride back to Appalachia from either the Ammo bailout or from Crawford? With Jefferson Notch Road open it's not a bad drive ...

micheal - I am sure it won't be a problem for you (and anyone else). If we have to make multiple trips, thats fine - that wahts nice about CMR - kind of central to it all.

we will probably have to get a system down tho for making sure everyone is accounted for after.
