    Trekking Poles in a Thunderstorm

Interesting question. The times i've been caught (while a pole user) in a t-storm, I just collapsed them and stowed them plastic handle skyward. Not that it matters much but i figured i'd keep the more pointed/prominent end down.

I have that area on my "to do list"! Probably this fall, though it sounds like a great spot during the "busy" season. MichaelJ, which route did you use on your trip? Great pics..

    E Trex Summit display question?

Sherpa, Thanks for the tip on shutting off the compass! Heck i always have my old reliable Suunto anyway! Sherpa & Jay, Thanks for the supplier link's. I've been a user of NiMH for two years now. They are great!! Great in the winter, though i hear lithium has some advantages...

    Howker Ridge

I've know my pace/time pretty well. I'm wondering if Valley Way fills up fast and early given it's small size. I'v never camped there. If it's full it's the hut (not my preference) or a slog over to one of the RMC facilities. I recall that being a difficult area for camping.

    E Trex Summit display question?

I recently picked up a Garmin E-trex Summit. I set it up and on using it the first day i noticed the display screen does not shut down as i have it set. I set it up for a 15 second display backlight shutdown and notice nothing at all in display change! The screen was on all day! I didn't...

    Howker Ridge

    Valuble Failure (Mt. Marshall)

Thanks for sharing the report and pics Tim. Looks like your decision was the right and best one that day! It looked like the family enjoyed themselves and had a great sense of humor with the "Thumbs Down Pic":-) Precious! A buddy of mine and i hikes in the whites during the last rainy spell...

    Howker Ridge

Thank's for the input Mohamed! That looks like a great change to the route!! Dave, thanks for the link, i must have missed it on your site. I have actually considered making it a backpack to give me a "weather day", and if i ended up with great weather just poke around up high, maybe...

    Howker Ridge

Perfect timming! I was going to post this very question! I'm planning going up Howker to Madison, on to Adams and out Lowes in the next couple of weeks. It sounded like a great route that isn't used as often as others (up at least). This of course assumes the weather gods smile that day! I'd...

    Peakbagging Cheating (or cheated)?

Sherpa, Must be something about the Carter area!! This past october several friends and i planned a traverse from Gorham to Pinkham hitting the whole ridge. There had been an early season snow but we opted not to bring crampons. They would not have done us any good this day anyway... We...

How do the men that use this site get their wives/gf to "allow" them to hike?

Like John L and SP, I'm pretty fortunate. My wife is very understanding and knows i need a regular "fix" of the outdoors! She'll actually tell me i'm getting too "Twitty" and to plan a hike!!! Big difference is we've been married 26 years and the kids are grown so she enjoys the dogs and...

    Keeping Middle Age at Bay

I turned 50 this May! I cut running way back a number of years ago due to constant injuries. Those were more sport induced. But i have found that at 50, running more that a few days a week was just too much when you add a long day or weekend on the trail. Since i've cut that back i've had...

    gregory pack vs. dana designs

I have a Dana Alpine LTW (lightweight) and love it! It has the Removable alpine shov-it that is great in winter and can be removed easily for three season use. The large toplid and the waistbelt are removable and make a great summit fanny pack. Pretty good sized too. It's a great well...
